John Ryan and his Mental Health Show 'Cracking Up'
CRACKING UP
A comedy show that raises awareness on mental well-being and proves that laughter really is the best medicine.
Cracking Up! is an innovative comedy show, that covers a difficult subject effectively highlighting issues surrounding mental health. Topical and sensitive, but very funny Cracking Up! is hugely entertaining.
Supported by Surrey NHS Primary Care Trust, Award winning comedian John Ryan, is joined by fellow comedian Gareth Berliner and actors from the Box Clever Theatre company. Through a unique blend of stand-up and sketches, Cracking Up takes a light hearted yet touching look at a widespread and increasing problem: One in four adults experience a common mental health problem such as depression or anxiety at some time in their lives.
John Ryan says: “Comedy is a great way of tackling issues that people may not ordinarily want to talk about. This show is also a great night out”.
In preparation for the show, John ran a series of discussions with different groups of men ranging from Fire-fighters and builders, to mental health service users, as men can find it difficult to talk about their feelings and seek the right kind of support. The material in the show came from these workshops.
The result is Cracking Up! a successful show which has toured to packed theatres across the south east and has now had its tour extended for a further three dates:
Monday 5th October Epsom Playhouse theatre 8pm
Tuesday 6th October The Kings Head Comedy Club, Crouch End N8 8AA 8pm
Sunday 11th October The Hob-Forest Hill , SE23 3HE 8pm
